What is Nia?

Nia is a holistic fusion of dance arts, martial arts and mindfulness that emphasizes the sensation of JOY. ​It is an extraordinary workout practice that tones your body while nourishing your spirit.

Nia is

A cardio-dance workout that combines 52 simple moves that are designed to get you fit in 60 minutes. A mindful movement experience that will leave you energized, mentally clear, and balanced. Based on the way your body is designed to move and practiced barefoot. A non-impact, flexible practice that incorporates tremendous variety and adapts to individual needs and abilities​.

I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to bring the Nia experience to the downtown Ann Arbor Phoenix Center. Sharing the sense of joy, personal vitality, and community that Nia has brought me (and so many others) is immensely rewarding --and such great fun!

Nia is a holistic fitness practice combining inspiring music from around the world with simple moves and flexible choreography. The resulting cardiovascular routine is accessible to all ages and levels of fitness. Nia truly is for “every Body,” no previous dance or movement-arts experience needed.

What else do I find uniquely inspiring about Nia? Nia classes foster a safe, non-competitive, and non-judgmental space designed to nurture the freedom of expression needed to cultivate a healthy body, mind and spirit connection. Nia is also very internationaI. Based in Portland Oregon, Nia is now found throughout the world. In addition to the United States, Canada, and most Western European countries, Nia is also in the Philippines, Sweden, Israel, Australia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, New Zealand, Reunion Island, and Hungary -- just to name a very few. I have found it a great pleasure to be able to meet and dance with people from all over the world!
